PART 1: CREATURE MARK
Research:
Before deciding on my creature I gathered information about both my choices. I already had decided I wanted to do a hyena but wasn't sure on what kind yet. So I did some research on the different attributes and characteristics between a striped and a spotted hyena.

Striped:
Smaller with a leaner, more angular frame. Shaggy and bristly coat with vertical stripes. Primarily scavengers and generally solitary or live in very small loose groups. Quiet and less vocal, their defense is raising their mane and hissing.

Spotted:
Larger of the species, heavy, and muscular. Short and coarse coat with dark spots. Active predators and social pack hunters in large female dominated clans. Highly vocal, with their famous "laughing" calls and hunched posture.

Sketches:
I drew both striped and spotted hyenas, but ultimately decided to go with the spotted hyena.
Then I explored different poses for the spotted hyena using reference photos and traced overtop highlighting the features and shadows more geometrically. After I wanted to go in the direction of implementing their famous "laugh" into the pose, so I merged two different reference pictures to create a separate pose, sketched overtop and then made digital iterations of that.
Scanned Sketched Iterations:
