PROJECT:
This project combines photography with typography, layout design, and packaging at two different scales (CD & LP). I will use photography to communicate a concept inspired by the style of music and and a pre-existing album title and artist. The LP covers should feature only the artist name and title, and the photography should reflect the sound of the band, lyrics in the songs, and the overall style of the artist.
Album:
Bavarian Fruit Bread by Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions (2001).
The album is a dream pop, slow core with a mix of indie folk and psychedelic folk. I wanted to express how this type of music feels with creating visuals that reflect the songs of the album.
Process:
I started with shooting a roll of black and white film of a neighborhood, but specifically focused on flowers. I then developed these negatives by spending lots of time experimenting in the darkroom printing until I was happy with the results of the range values.
I then started to add color to the flowers of the prints. The original album was primarily black, white and yellow, so I wanted to also implement those colors in mine because I felt like it represents the calmness of the music.
I did feel like it was missing something, although it worked, I wanted to push it further by adding a purple hue. This added a new expression to the cover and ultimately worked better than the original black and white. Then I also created a subtle double exposure by over lapping the same image and rotating it. This made the cover more visually appealing, adding a more ethereal but whispery feel that is expressed in the album.
Final Design with Type:
The typeface I chose was Courier Prime, and was inspired by the original text of the album.
